A heat wave assaults the senses. There’s the feeling of extreme warmth and the sight of air that almost seemingly bends in sizzling temperatures. And what’s that you’re hearing? It’s your air conditioner running and the sound of your bank account drying up. But don’t despair, as here’s how to cut those costs during the summer.

Improve plantings around your house
Most heat that accumulates inside a house comes directly from the sun shining onto the roof or through windows, and heats the house directly. Planting leafy trees around the building’s exterior will stop the sun from shining directly inside your home, and contributes positively to our environment. If the trees or shrubs shade your air conditioner, you could increase your AC’s efficiency by up to 10%.

Go ahead, get comfortable.
Lower your air conditioner’s thermostat setting to 24-26 degrees Celsius when you’re at home. But let that number rise to a higher temperature at night or when you’re not at home. During the night you don’t require the same level of conscious cool. Try turning your AC down (so it is running less) during your sleep hours or, if your unit has one, utilize the “sleep mode” which lowers the output on a timer. You can save 5% to 15% on your air-conditioning bills by raising the temperature setting on your thermostat when you’re away and don’t need cooling, according to the Department of Energy.

AC efficiency is mostly a function of technology
Keep the filter clean to allow for good air movement and keep the unit level so the condensation drains properly. If you swap your older non inverter air conditioner for a new unit which offers invert technology, it will result in a 30% reduction in your energy costs. Put the AC fan speed on high, except on especially humid days. On humid days, place the speed on low. The slower air movement through the air-conditioning equipment removes more moisture from the air, improving comfort in your home.
